Tails Additional Software - Opsec Risks
- /u/whataname 📢 12th March, 2024 - 10:19 Just curious but what yousl you normally use the right-click -> props -> hash/digest for? to verify like tails download .img files? Root terminal sha256sum wil do the same thing.
Yeah, stuff like that. Anything where I want to check the integrity of files like copying things to USB. I did mention that I was aware of the terminal commands (shasum -a 256 or the one you said) but just prefer a GUI.

As for package manger, I can't even get it to load and my additional software wasn't insalling until magicaly it started working the other day somehow.
That's strange. Mine's worked from the start but v6.0 is the first time I've tried the additional software feature.

But to answer your question: you can't be fingerprinted by the software you install other than using the software if it uses the network. Fingerprinting is usually dont with plugins installed, screen resolution, etc. in your browser. But you need javascript enabled for most of that to work which is shouldn't be. I'm no expert, but this is my understanding. That all said, the less software you install, the safer you will be overall.
Thank you that's very useful to know. I've read that Tails OS is easy to fingerprint so I didnt want to be that guy standing out from the crowd using Tails but with something distinctive about it. I've only added apps that I think are offline only but some file managers do have online capabilities which is a bit concerning. I suppose I should read all the docs before going any further. I'm definitely not deliberately trying to connect to anything with them and I hope Tails firewall should block any obscure background activity if there is any(?), which I doubt because these are open source apps. Totally agree though, the less software, the less attack surface, the more secure in general.

can you do without those "five core apps"? Tails should already have most everythng you need.
Yes I could but its a quality of life thing and if theres negligible risk I see no reason not to use it, being a small time buyer and a very low value LE target. That's the reason for my questions. To find out if it really is negligible risk. Cheers.

XMR to other coins
- /u/whataname 13th March, 2024 - 08:35 It's a good question. As a buyer, I don't have to deal with it but I sometimes wonder how vendors manage with all the AML checks. They're certainly not going to reveal their best methods here in public though!

Wasup Monero
- /u/whataname 11th March, 2024 - 21:33 Trocador is easy to use for converting other cryptocurrenciess to Monero. No account needed and it's setup to find the cheapest excahnge rate at the time.

I'd say its more difficult to first learn how to not store your coins on an exchange for average Joe. Most dont even know what a personal wallet is but once they've learned how to use one, converting to Monero isn't a big challenge in comparison.

Got 90 goodies I didn't order. What to do?
- /u/whataname 12th March, 2024 - 07:42 If it's an untracked delivery then it never happened so just enjoy the goodies :) Vendor deserves it for saving your address.

New Feather Wallet Is Available, 2.6.5 Came Out Quickly
- /u/whataname 17th March, 2024 - 21:11 I take it you're aware that Feather tells you at the bottom of the window when there's a new update? But yeah, Thotbot's been doing some amazing work recently. Monero v0.18.3.3 supported before the official software's even been released :)
