PGP Agent not runing

by /u/Dom_23 · 0 votes · 2020-06-08 16:56:00

Ever since upgrading to 4.6 and now 4.7 my pgp has been working very inconsistently. I am not talking about importing keys, I know that is a common issue. So this is the problem, if anybody cares to help.

For a lot of actions, especially regarding decrypting the clipoard, I get an error message:

gpg: invalid size of lockfile "/amnesia ...
gpg: cannot read lockfile
gpg: can't connect to the agent: Invalid argument.

Problems can resolve with restarting tails, but it spawns up almost always, so it's a reall pain. Is there something I can do, is this a common problem, or do I need to reinstal tails?

Ty!

I can encrypt with my key, but I can't decrypt with it. That's when I get the above message. Unfortunately due to this, I can't log in to my account's that have 2 factor authorisation. And if I export my private key, I can't re-import in on a nother tails usb instalation.

Okay, scratch that. I see that the key editor shows there are actually no private keys, just public ones. What the hell happend here And if I try and create a new key, it also says no agent running ...

It sounds like your Tails and/or the persistent storage is broken. I think the best you can do is doing a backup to another Tails and fresh reinstalling your main Tails.

Something's broken, that's for sure hah I just want to try and get my private key back somehow ... By reinstall, you mean format and fresh instal or is there something like a "repair OS" function built into Tails? Tnx bro

You know maybe if I could try and copy the key from where it's being saved on disk and then copy paste to a nother tails instalation?

Or just use the Tails backup solution: https://tails.boum.org/doc/first_steps/persistence/copy/index.en.html

Theoretically you can just use another Tails to clone your main Tails which will overwrite the (maybe broken) file system with a fresh new one but it should not delete your persistent storage. But in any way you will first need to have a second Tails on another USB-Stick and you will already have downloaded the .img file anyway so i think having a fresh new Tails first, then doing the backup from your old Tails to your new one, then doing a clean fresh installation of your old Tails, then doing the same backup steps but with your backup Tails to your new Tails to get your persistent storage back on your main Tails would be the best solution because then your main Tails is completely new and you will have a backup Tails too for the future.

Tnx mate, appreciate your help! I resolved the problem by going to System tools -> Additional Software, selected the gnpg items in the installed dir and reinstalled them from there. It didn't work by first. The software jsut crashed, but after a second restart, gnupg works, and my private keys are back. So I just exported them and now I have proper backups. Don't know if this is what actually made it work, but my problem is now fixed. Your way would have probably been safer to do though! Tnx for your solution, learned something new. I'm proficient in windows, but am still learning talis.
