A simple thank you means a lot

by /u/porkypig · 0 votes · 2024-04-17 04:21:00

One thing I noticed on this forum is that not enough people say thank you when somebody reaches out to help them. it's not just me. I've seen that with plenty other people that reach out and an offer some feedback based on their own experience often it's very helpful.

You don't even have to reply with a thank you. You can just simply bump up who gave you useful feedback, by clicking the little triangle to the left. It's a single click costs no time/money. It means a lot to who posted that feedback and can walk away from that conversation feeling good because they were able to help somebody out. This applies to everyone on this forum, including the staff because without all of us helping each other out, it all falls apart.

----------------------------
Side note. Maybe the mods and admins would be inclined to add an option underneath the post called thank you and a thumbs up is added or something like that.

As and old wise man once said "The darknet is one of the only place where a harden criminal can be told to fuck off by a 12 year old" But i understand what your saying it would be nice to hear thank you but from what i have experience it always been a "pass it on" culture on the darknet. Lots of examples Hugbunter, Paris, DoingFedTime, newbieforever2018 and many more.

I think as we all get older, we have an obligation to lead by example and "send the elevator back down". Spend quite a bit of time doing that in my personal life as well as my business life whether or be mentoring, coffee conversations, or just a random online chat.

You're right cos I'm a regular victim of this. I've even had multiple people on here load crypto from banks, spread malware, made successful wires all with my instructions and then no appreciation in return, they just go ghost lol after making money. And yeah, I'm always happy to help people who are polite about their requests and questions and straight up ignore the rude and commanding ones.

Basically comes down to don't be a dick and treat others like you wanna be treated. this is one of the reasons why I don't bother with the social media BS ...so easy to dismiss or say stuff you normally wouldn't say to their face. when you happen to see them, you challenge them on it and it's usually some excuse like oh I had too much to drink or I was in a bad mood or I don't remember. lol. its stupid. Yeah, I've definitely seen cases where people treat this site as like customer service at some software company. And yes, I'd like to think that a good portion of us are far more knowledgeable about something than some CS rep, but it's not always the case so with that said when you ask a question sometimes you might not get answers that you are really looking for....so just say thanks and move on.

Yep i just assume not to get a thank you when helping *alot of replies i make are towards helping/harm-reduction*.. But at the same time i would feel arrogant if i expected a thank you everytime..

+1 This is so true, sometimes i take my time to send a huge message to help op on what he asked and they dont even answer, they just take the info and dont even care. I dont help to get something back but come on guys its the bare minimum to show some appreciation About score as a whole there is a big issue in dread, people just descore more often then they give score actually the majority of people only descore and dont give score. And most of the times for no apparent reason

/u/Porkypig I dont think the solution you recommended will change anything the button is there they just dont click it. About score as a whole there is a big issue in dread, people just descore more often then they give score actually the majority of people that are not community established user only descore and dont give score. I suggest a "ratio limited score" you can only descore in the same ratio as you give score, this would help the issue of people descoring for no reason and of "descoring attacks" The problem we are talking about may not be that serious but in long term people will stop helping other and that could be threat to dread /u/hubunter /u/paris Since im giving a sugestion i'll drop another one not related with this, you could add a option to tag @dread for example and all mods of the sub would be tagged, i could have used that in this comment instead of mentioning hb and p

Some very good points. And this is definitely the thread to kind of talk them through. So scoring or scoring might not be a great idea because it has an impact on the user. Maybe we could consider asking for an option to what I mentioned in the original post which is a simple button says thank you. I'm stealing this idea from the torrent tracker sites, they trying to eliminate so much noise in the comments. certainly does the job and it does reduce noise although it's gotta be looked at and managed to make sure people are using it effectively.

I understand your suggestion but imo it doesn't make sense, the button is there adding another one with another name won't make people click it. The only down side of my suggestion is that use wont be able to "downvote" if they haven't "upvoted" other people, it dosen't need to be a equal number it can have some margin like imagine you have a total of 50 upvotes given and 40 downvotes given, that is okay, but if you have a larger ratio like 5 upvotes given and 30 downvotes given you are blocked from downvoting till the ratio gets closer. But yea we agree to disagree np, we left 2 suggestions lets hope someone hear us

Oh, don't get me wrong. I don't disagree with you. I don't think your idea is bad in anyway or wrong. I think it's great, but I could foresee that it takes far more developer time to do that. Also people get downloaded for some of the silliest reasons maybe the reply was something that the other person just didn't like, there's nothing awful. Just not a fan but has like years of history on this forum. It's use cases like that that come to mind again you can code for that but again it's gonna mean more developer time to basically aggregate their entire history and see if they qualify to vote or down vote. I guess what I'm thinking about is prioritization and the terms of the groups believed is most helpful so like a ranking if you will. in addition to that a simple thank you. :) which takes literately like 30 seconds to do in a reply text, as long as the action doesnt result in a 404. Sigh.. So many times I had to come up with a short short short version of what I was going to say because of a timeout.
