Does anyone have experience with a USB drive failing? I'm wondering how a failing drive would act. Would it be catastrophic and imminent, or slowly degrading?

It depends on the USB. Some of them will start giving errors and after become unreadable or lock into a read-only state. Sometimes the controller will burn out and your data is pretty much gone in that case. Just have a backup if you really care of what you have in your persistent storage
