Tails OS on Steam Deck? Opsec problems or just a stupid idea?

by /u/OffendedConstantly · 0 votes · 25th November, 2023 02:40

I like having a device that can run tails on me constantly, just in case I run out due to a binge, and my laptop recently broke. Is it any problem to put tails (most recent ofc) on my Steam Deck? Are there any OPSEC problems, is it clunky does it just not work? Thanks.

The X86-64 CPU is compatable, but you might have issues with the AMD GPU. Tails website has some workarounds for known GPU problems on their "Known issues with graphics cards" section, so might need to play around a bit to get it working. Would be cool thought, much stealthier than carrying a laptop. Browse Dread for a bit, and the next minute run some quests in Zelda.

Just got into it, it works out of the box. Haven't done much testing yet, so may have some issues later on, but none yet. No graphics card tinkering, just fine. I did have some usability problems, where when I would scroll, instead of doing that, it would highlight text. I was able to mitigate that by using my fingers and the sticks instead of the trackpad.

That's pretty cool, well done! How's the boot time? Are you using a USB C or microSD? Is the touchscreen functional?

Touchscreen is functional, boot time is about a minute or 2, one thing that you may have to worry abt is that you can't scan the QR code for a bridge if you needed one

Does the steamdeck even have an usb slot?

USB c, yeah. I have a drive with USB-A on one end and USB C on the other. Pretty useful actually

I'm interested in seeing if this would really work. It does have a USC C port for it and can run linux so it should work. Might be an amazing portable device.

Firestick? is that the "Fire TV Stick 4K"? (like on Amazon?). Both these ideas are brilliant! and I am keen to explore them!! Anyone got other ideas like this - Please DM me, I am happy to try it out and share the results!

I think that this is a brilliant idea! A laptop is ok, people expect people to have a laptop on them at all times, but this is a little sneakier! I like it! I have questions about the use-ability of it (as in, is the functionality the same (apart from the comment on the GPU, and clearly the "slower" processing speed/power)), guessing you would need to use the on-screen keyboard/touch screen - which is a pain and slower than mouse/keyboard... anyway, worth a test out! Thanks for the idea!

Would love to see this happen and the structure is compatible

Has anybody tried it yet? I may try it today just to see if it would work out
