Using denatured ethanol as a solvent

by /u/[deleted] · 0 votes · 2024-04-26 05:14:00

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if you can use denatured ethanol safely as a solvent? I know you're not supposed to use it for anything related to weed, but if I was trying to clean up something that's soluble in it, would whatever they add wind up in the end product? What's in denatured alcohol anyway?

no you cant use it.... Denatured alcohol, also known as methylated spirits, metho, or meths in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom; and denatured rectified spirit is ethanol that has additives to make it poisonous, bad-tasting, foul-smelling, or nauseating to discourage its recreational consumption. Edit: The denaturants can include methanol, benzene, pyridine, castor oil, gasoline, isopropyl alcohol, and acetone

Probably not, like Northofthenexus says. But look at the ingredients or search for the sds/msds for the exact brand/product (all contents should be listed in section 3) and depending on what's in it and what you're using it for it *might* be okay. Like if you're trying to recrystallize from it, and the only denaturant is isopropyl alcohol at like 5%, you can probably get away with it. IPA isn't that toxic (relatively I mean), and as long as you dry your recrystallized product well enough I think that would be fine. Be aware that the additives themselves might fuck with its use as a solvent; (for example, if your desired compound is somewhat/poorly soluble in ethanol -making it a good recrystallization solvent- but very soluble in isopropyl alcohol, well now that's gonna cause headaches for you). I wouldn't consider using anything with a bitterant like dinatonium benzoate, or a very high-boiling solvent like castor oil. Fuck pyridine- hard veto. Benzene is notoriously carcinogenic, but if its dried well (and you're not breathing the vapors while its drying) you could get away with it. Methanol is toxic & causes blindness, but similar to benzene as long as its dried well enough it'll be okay (and methanol is a very good solvent in its own right). Of course, the safest bet is to just get good ol' non-denatured ethanol (everclear). The *only* disadvantage I can think of is cost- which, uh, is minuscule and worth it compared to your health.
